Tell us a story: New Malden Murugan Temple Chariot Festival My story is about New Malden Murugan Temple Chariot Festival, usually held during the summer between August -September months of every year, lasts more than 18 days. On the day of the chariot festival the lord Murugan comes out for procession, is beautifully decorated and bought out of the temple along with his consort to the great car and go for the procession all day long on the road. This chariot is said to the smallest one of its type in size and height. It is 35 feet tall and weights more than 80 tons. This Chariot is extensively decorated with colourful wooden carvings and finishes. It requires a minimum of 500 people to pull the chariot around the four surrounding streets of the temple. The prayers wear special clothes for the chariot festival that is saree for women and boys wear vetti without shirt but some people wear them with shirt on. The chariot is a beautiful structure with intricate work and that’s where the Lord Murugan sits and so as the Priests. When the temple comes from the street we take the lord Murugan back into the temple on our shoulders with small dance. While the Lord Murugan Comes on road, the prayers sing songs along with it.There will be instrument playing on the road as well. We give out drinks and food to the prayers on the road. When the chariot comes back to temple we give out the main food, which is rice and vegetarian, curry, after this the priests decorate the lord Murugan and we take it back to inside the temple.
